Q. What is one of the biggest challenges families face when navigating senior care?

One of the biggest challenges families face when navigating senior care is simply not knowing where to start. Many families are already overwhelmed balancing work, personal responsibilities, and the needs of an aging parent or loved one. They may also be unaware of the resources, services, and support options available to them; resources that can ease some of that stress and improve the overall situation for both the older adult and the family.

Q. How can caregivers better prepare for major care transitions?

Caregivers can better prepare for major care transitions by planning ahead and not waiting until a crisis occurs. Last-minute decisions are often made under pressure and may not always be the best fit for the older adult or the family. Planning early can reduce stress, help families understand their options, avoid unnecessary costs, and, in some cases, prevent a situation from becoming more challenging. Being proactive gives families more time to make thoughtful, informed decisions and put the right resources and support in place.

Q. What role does care coordination play in helping older adults receive the right support?

Care coordination helps ensure an older adult’s needs are addressed and that important details don’t fall through the cracks. Having one point of contact can help organize day-to-day needs, coordinate services and appointments, and keep communication flowing among the older adult, family members, healthcare providers, and others involved in their care. It also helps identify additional services and community resources that may improve the person’s overall health, safety, independence, and quality of life.

Q. How can benefits and resource navigation make the caregiving journey easier for families?

Benefits and resource navigation can make the caregiving journey easier by reducing some of the stress and responsibility families are carrying. A knowledgeable professional who understands available benefits, programs, and community resources can save families time, help them avoid unnecessary frustration, and guide them when important decisions need to be made. It gives families added support and helps them feel more informed and confident about the options available for their loved one.

Q. What advice would you give a family beginning to navigate senior care for a loved one?

If you are beginning to navigate senior care and already feel overwhelmed, remember you don’t have to do it alone. Guidance and support are available to help you understand your options and make better-informed decisions.

My biggest advice is to be proactive, not reactive. Planning can reduce stress, prevent rushed decisions, and give you more time to put the right resources and support in place. It can also help you feel more confident in the decisions you make for your loved one.
