At Learn2Care, we value the voices of caregivers who share the experiences that brought them into caregiving and the moments that have stayed with them throughout their careers.
We talked to Betty Jane Chimelis, a caregiver working at Girling Personal Care and someone with 30 years’ experience in the field. Her career started when she was young, influenced first by her father’s illness and then by a friend who was beginning classes as a CNA.
Here is Betty’s story, in her own words.
I started because my dad was sick while I was growing up. Sadly, we lost him when I was 14.
When I was 18, my best friend was starting CNA classes, so that’s how I got started in caregiving.
One of my favorite memories from my 30 years of experience is from when I was working with nuns. Some of them had memory problems. My last name used to be Stormes, and one of the nuns who had memory problems would call me “Stormy” every day when I came to work.
It was amazing because she didn’t remember anything else, but she remembered my last name.
One of the challenges I faced was when my mom passed away. I was with her, and seeing her pass made it hard to keep doing caregiving. But I still do it because, for the most part, it brings me joy.
My message to new caregivers is:
“Please don’t get into this field if you are in it for the money. Do it for the people who need you. “
