Meaningful activity and social engagement are essential to quality of life in long-term care. Residents who participate in activities connected to their interests, strengths, and identities experience improved physical health, emotional well-being, cognitive engagement, and reduced isolation. This course explores the principles and practices of person-centred activity programming that recognizes each resident as a unique individual with preferences, abilities, and life experiences.
Through four focused modules, activity professionals learn to assess resident interests and preferences, understand the importance of meaningful engagement, plan inclusive activities that accommodate diverse abilities and interests, and evaluate program effectiveness. The course emphasizes the difference between simply providing activities and fostering genuine engagement—connecting residents to activities that reflect their identities, values, and aspirations while supporting belonging and quality of life.
