My Caregiving Moment with Jennifer Sermabeikia

My Caregiving Moment - Jennifer Sermabeikian

Some of my most treasured caregiving memories come from the simple, heartfelt moments I shared with my dad. One special part of our daily routine was “couch exercises,” gentle movements we adapted together, even when his legs grew weaker and his back ached. Exercise had always been a passion of his, and finding creative ways to keep him engaged not only supported his physical well-being but also deepened our bond. Those moments of laughter, encouragement, and connection became more precious than I could have ever imagined.

“The simplest acts of care often create the most lasting memories.”

– Jennifer Sermabeikian

Our days followed a gentle rhythm. Most mornings started before the world was awake, because that’s when Dad liked to step outside and say hello to the sun, his oldest friend. That small routine brought him comfort and gave him a sense of control. I helped him get ready, made breakfast, and sat with him as we talked about the day ahead. Doctor visits and follow-ups became part of our routine. I did my best to ask the right questions, take notes, and follow up with research to make sure he got the care he needed.

Movement was always included in our day. At first, we went for walks. Later, we switched to couch stretches and gentle bed movements. But more than the stretches, it was the way we did them, together with laughter, patience, and love, that mattered most.

“It wasn’t the routines or the research he remembered; it was the way I sat beside him and truly listened.”

That’s what stuck with me. Not the checklists. Not the perfect schedule. The simple act of being there. Sitting beside him, hearing his stories, letting him feel seen and heard. It reminded me that caregiving isn’t just about tasks. It’s about presence.

In those small, quiet moments, I realized something powerful. Love lives in the pauses. In showing up. In listening without rushing. In honoring who someone is, not just caring for their needs but caring for their spirit.

Looking back, those couch stretches weren’t just about movement. They were about hope, strength, and the deep love between a daughter and her dad.
