Understanding Assisted Living and Resident Support in British Columbia

Assisted living services in British Columbia are built on a fundamental philosophy: supporting residents to maintain dignity, choice, and independence while providing necessary assistance with activities of daily living. This philosophy represents a shift from “”doing for”” residents to “”supporting with””—recognizing that residents are autonomous individuals with preferences, choices, and rights, even when they require assistance.

This course explores the seven core components of assisted living services as defined in BC residential care regulations: nutrition and eating support, mobility assistance, personal care and hygiene, medication management, property safekeeping, therapeutic diet management, behaviour support, and psychosocial care. Through practical scenarios, real-world examples, and BC-specific regulatory guidance, workers learn to provide competent, person-centred care that respects individual dignity while ensuring safety, health, and well-being.
