Dr. M. Samm Pryce shares insights on supporting caregivers

From Panic to Clarity: A Better Way to Support Caregivers and Patients

Caregiving can begin out of nowhere. You might not feel prepared, but you jump in anyway. Before long, you’re assisting with health choices, everyday care, and providing emotional support—all while trying to handle your own life. It’s a heavy load to carry without a clear path.

This is where the correct structure and medical partner make all the difference. Dr. M. Samm (Robinson) Pryce, Chief Medical Officer and Naturopathic Physician at Balanced Integration, has experienced this firsthand. She shares how she built her work around helping caregivers move from panic to clarity, without losing themselves along the way.

Q. Why do caregivers often feel stressed when supporting a loved one through a tough illness?

Caregivers feel stressed because they quickly have to do it all. They assist in understanding medical info, handling appointments, making choices, and staying strong while still working, caring for family, and managing daily life. Also, serious illness causes much uncertainty. Symptoms change; test results can be incomplete, and treatment plans may shift without much warning. So, over time, the pressure builds, leading to emotional exhaustion, anxiety, and the feeling that there is never a clear roadmap forward.

Q. How does the V.I.T.A.L. Approach™ help bring clarity and calm during uncertain health decisions?

I love this question cause this is my baby and my signature program… The V.I.T.A.L. Approach™ brings calm because it gives caregivers something they rarely get: a step-by-step structure when everything feels chaotic.

V Vital Sleep: because exhausted brains can’t make clear decisions.

I Individualize Everything: because one-size-fits-all medicine is often where confusion starts. We focus on this person, this body, this terrain.

T Thorough Hydration: because dehydration and electrolyte imbalance can worsen fatigue, brain fog, constipation, dizziness, and anxiety, all of which derail decision-making.

An Active Mental Health: because fear and grief deserve support, not suppression.

L Lymphatic Flow: because circulation, detox pathways, inflammation, and recovery matter especially during treatment stress.

Instead of “trying everything,” caregivers learn what matters most FIRST. I have found that this is nerve-racking to my patients cause they cannot decide what the PRIORITY is. That alone reduces panic and restores a sense of control without pretending we can control everything.

“Caregivers don’t fail from lack of love; they fail from lack of support and structure. And that’s solvable. ”

– Dr. M. Samm (Robinson) Pryce

Q. How can feeling good emotionally and physically be boosted by this type of care for patients and caregivers?

For patients, it looks at everything, not just the illness, along with standard treatments. It gets the body strong with good food, being active supplements if you need them, plus ways to calm down, and tests if they are needed.

And it is beneficial for caregivers, too, because you matter! Worn-out caregivers mess everything up. Talking falls apart, things don’t get done, and burnout is a huge deal. This care makes a plan for both patient and caregiver, for body and mind.

Q. What’s one mindset shift that can reassure caregivers about their decisions?

The top thing you can do is ditch the I’m soloing this! mindset. Switch to finding a pro partner and a team that clicks. Confidence grows when you’re not alone. When your doctor actually knows you, you’re not just reacting to tests or symptoms or whatever advice.

Q. What advice would you give to caregivers who feel they have to handle everything themselves?

The advice I give caregivers right away is what I had to hear myself:

  • Quit trying to remember everything. Jot down the top 3 things this week (like easing symptoms, getting to appointments, and food). If it’s not top 3, it waits.
  • Grow a team, don’t go solo. Just one person helping with food, rides, or even phone calls is huge.
  • Find someone to guide you. Caregivers don’t need data dumps. They need someone who explains, plans, and supports. The right partner saves time, stops problems, and helps you stand tall again.

Caregivers don’t fail from not caring. They fail because they don’t have a backup and a plan. It’s fixable.

Wrapping Up

Dr. Pryce sets the record straight: caregiving doesn’t have to be a constant mess. Caregiver stress isn’t a personal flaw. It’s a system problem. When care is everywhere, and there’s no real advice, anyone burns out.
