Workplace Violence Prevention for Home Care Workers
This course meets general OSHA requirements for workplace violence prevention and meets the requirements for California SB 553. It prepares home care workers to recognize, prevent, and respond to violence in the field. It covers legal definitions, four types of workplace violence, employer plan participation, reporting rights, incident documentation, de-escalation strategies to ensure safety, and helps learners understand their legal rights to a safe workplace, free from retaliation.
Learners will build confidence through scenario-based learning. Caregivers will learn how to follow their employer’s violence prevention plan and play an active role in maintaining a safe environment. The course also emphasizes the importance of reporting incidents and knowing legal rights and protections.

- Define workplace violence and distinguish among the four recognized types (criminal intent, customer/client, worker-on-worker, and personal relationships).
- Describe the key components of the employer’s Workplace Violence Prevention Plan, including how to access it and participate in its development.
- Identify common workplace violence hazards in home and community-based care settings and explain strategies to avoid or minimize physical harm.
- Report incidents and concerns through appropriate channels without fear of retaliation, including when and how to involve law enforcement.
- Locate and interpret the violent incident log and related documentation, understanding their role in tracking and preventing future harm.
- Recognize when additional training is required, such as after an incident, plan change, or new hazard is identified.
