By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
- Describe the basic anatomy and function of the respiratory system, including the lungs, trachea, diaphragm, and airway structures.
- Explain how aging affects respiratory function, including reduced lung elasticity, weaker muscles, and decreased oxygen exchange.
- Identify common respiratory conditions in older adults, such as COPD, pneumonia, asthma, bronchitis, and respiratory infections.
- Recognize early signs of respiratory or cardiovascular distress—such as shortness of breath, bluish lips, wheezing, or fatigue—and know how, what, and when to report.
- Assist with client care procedures related to respiratory health, as permitted by your nurse supervisor and agency, including:
