Body Changes with Age: Respiratory System

As people age, changes in the respiratory system can lead to reduced lung capacity, increased fatigue, and a higher risk of infections and chronic conditions such as COPD and pneumonia. This course provides caregivers with foundational knowledge of the respiratory system and how aging impacts breathing, energy, and comfort.

Learners will explore common respiratory conditions, understand vital signs associated with respiratory health, and learn how to recognize early signs of distress. The course also includes caregiver procedures such as assisting with oxygen, applying antiembolism stockings, and positioning for respiratory comfort—always within scope and under nursing direction.

Learning Objectives

What you'll learn

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Describe the basic anatomy and function of the respiratory system, including the lungs, trachea, diaphragm, and airway structures.
  • Explain how aging affects respiratory function, including reduced lung elasticity, weaker muscles, and decreased oxygen exchange.
  • Identify common respiratory conditions in older adults, such as COPD, pneumonia, asthma, bronchitis, and respiratory infections.
  • Recognize early signs of respiratory or cardiovascular distress—such as shortness of breath, bluish lips, wheezing, or fatigue—and know how, what, and when to report.
  • Assist with client care procedures related to respiratory health, as permitted by your nurse supervisor and agency, including:

    • Measuring and recording respiratory rate

    • Applying antiembolism stockings as instructed

    • Assisting with oxygen use under supervision

    • Positioning clients to support breathing and circulatory comfort

  • Support safety and comfort during breathing-related tasks, while respecting client dignity and following care plans.
