Emergency Response for Non-Medical Caregivers

This course prepares non-medical caregivers to respond appropriately and effectively in emergency situations. Caregivers will learn how to identify emergencies, when and how to call 911, and how to provide supportive, non-invasive care until help arrives. Emphasis is placed on safety, staying calm under pressure, and knowing basic actions that can save lives while staying within the caregiver’s scope of responsibility.

What you'll learn

By the end of this class, caregivers will be able to:


  • Recognize signs of a medical emergency and know when and how to make an immediate call to 911.
  • Communicate clearly and calmly with 911 operators and first responders.
  • Describe the caregiver's role in an emergency, including what they can and should not do.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of how to support a client while waiting for emergency personnel (e.g., maintaining airway, checking pulse, controlling bleeding).
  • Maintain safety for both the client and themselves during emergencies.
